VERNON, Los Angeles County — Business owners preparing renovations or equipment upgrades in Vernon should check with the city’s Building Division before construction begins.
The city says permits are normally needed for new construction and a range of alterations, including new windows or door openings, additions, roofing replacement, mechanical-unit replacements, moving walls, electrical changes, plumbing changes, major foundation work and retaining walls over three feet. Even seemingly modest work can require plan review if it alters a building system.
Some work may qualify for a simpler process
The city says certain over-the-counter permits may be available for uncomplicated projects. Simple maintenance, such as replacing a faucet or switch without altering a system, may not need a building permit. But exemption from a building permit does not necessarily eliminate planning, fire, health or other approvals.
Vernon specifically advises businesses to call the Building Department at 323-583-8811 when expanding operations. Applicants should describe the proposed scope, address and type of business and ask whether plans, trade permits or other agency review are needed.
Relying on a contractor’s generic checklist is risky because local requirements can vary with the project. Starting before approval may trigger costly corrections.
