VERNON, Los Angeles County — Businesses operating inside the industrial City of Vernon should review their municipal licensing requirements before the end of the calendar year. The city says every business entity, including sole proprietors, must obtain a city business license before beginning operations.

Licenses ordinarily run on a calendar-year basis, and the city mails renewal notices around mid-November. The city lists December 31 as the annual renewal submission and payment deadline, with a subsequent grace period before penalties begin. Businesses should not treat receipt of a mailed reminder as a substitute for meeting the deadline.

What happens after the grace period?

The city’s license page states that failure to pay by the close of business on the first day of February results in a 10% penalty, followed by additional penalties of 10% per month up to a combined 50% cap. The actual tax varies with business classification and activity level.

For renewal amounts, documentation or questions about whether an activity is subject to licensing, contact the Business License Clerk at businesslicense@cityofvernon.org or 323-583-8811, extension 320. City Hall is at 4305 S. Santa Fe Avenue.
